Purchasing wine is not a simple task. While shopping for wine, I am often asked, ''Do you need help sir?'' I am sure this is due to the amount of time I spend looking at every bottle. I am sure I look lost as I roam the isles. I am actually not lost but captivated. I love to think about how it might taste, but I am also a design enthusiast. I admiring the beauty of a well executed label design.

Marinus, simple elegant. Nice overall clean design...sold! Once purchased, it's off to the web to find out about this purchase. What is unique about the vineyard, or region it is from? When I read about Bernardus Vineyard and this bottle of Marinus the vision for this painting became clear. The following caption taken from the
Bernardus website was the inspiration for the painting ''Lakefront Living.''

''The Bernardus estate vineyards of Marinus and Featherbow Ranch are located in the Cachagua region of the Carmel Valley. We have been told that Cachagua is the Spanish word Native Americans used for deep or hidden water. It has been said that Native Americans believed that all things in nature were sacred and interrelated. Their respect for balance in nature is carried on in the vineyards of Bernardus. More than 300 live oaks have been preserved to thrive among carefully planted vines.''

First and Foremost, cheers to those at Bernardus Vineyards that chose to keep the 300 oak trees. Many times we don't treasure the simple things.

I live in Albert Lea Minnesota on the point of Fountain Lake. Over the years I have tried very hard to maintain a balance between the canopy of the beautiful trees in my backyard and the sensational views of the lake.
Shimmering mornings and the burning fire like glows of the evenings setting sun, is always multiplied by its reflection on the lake. This reflection glows from the furthest point of the lake straight to my home.

When you view this painting Lakefront Living, you can experience the canopy of the trees with the sun setting on the backside of our home. It is not obvious, it is reflected in the bottle of Marinus. The setting for this
painting is our deck looking out and down to what gives me peace and balance, the lake. This is more than a deck, it is our second kitchen, dining room, and family room. This is where my children help to maintain the numerous potted herbs, vegetables and flowers. It is where they swim, and play. It is where we share great food, and conversation with our friends and family. It is a place to reflect, recuperate, and dream. As the cork says ''Taste a Dream.''

Lakefront living encompasses two elements that I believe are very important in life. Balance, and Dreams. I spent many years dreaming of living on a lake. Now that I do, I need to appreciate and celebrate that I have made one of my dreams come true.

Patience and perseverance, sounds like just words until one has experienced them. I have been involved in art from as early as I can remember. Many times it seems that my work goes now where. Hours, weeks, months... have I learned anything? I continue on my journey, forcing myself to paint when everyone else has long gone to bed for the evening. The next morning I get up at the same time as everyone else to make sure all is well and bills are paid. Time passes and occasionally an old painting appears from my closet, or I look though photos of paintings from my not so distant past. It is then that I realize that hard work, sacrifice, patience and most importantly perseverance have paid off. I see the changes in my work. Sometimes the changes are miniscule, and sometimes they are breathtaking for me. Non the less it is what keeps me moving forward. The late nights, missed boat rides or missed events become irrelevant and fade away to thoughts of how good will I be by this time next year?

I am sure that Tejinder has experienced this in her own way as well. The years it takes to become a professional in her field is probably something she expected but didn't realize how challenging the dedication and sacrifice would actually be until it was experienced.

I hope this painting Patience and Perseverance serves as a constant reminder that the rewards of life are more golden when they arise out of dedication, sacrifice, patience and the perseverance, and even more golden when experienced with others for twenty five years.

  • 24x20 Oil It begins with the thought of relaxation, and migrates to the comforting sound of a cube or two rolling to the bottom of your favorite glass. Will it be two strong flavors or will the choice be more to the mild side? The decision is made, the lid is cracked to your favorite bourbon or single malt scotch. The scent transcends you to a place of peace. Now with cigar in hand, you feel how well this leaf has been rolled. Weather you bite off the tip or choose the more refined method of a double guillotine, the cigar is now trimmed and yet another sense has been brought to life.

For me alcohol and cigars are not about the mere experience of smoking and drinking. It is much more complex. It is about the entire experience. I enjoy how these relaxing indulgences heighten the awareness of all your senses. Sight, touch, smell, taste and, yes, even hearing is a part of enjoying a favorite elixir and cigar. The graphics on a label of scotch tell me a story. The appearance of the cigar gives me an insight to what I may expect. The feel of a favorite weighted bottom glass, is another familiar feeling that declares something special is about to transpire. The texture of the cigar further reveals it's craftsmanship. Its silky touch tells me it has been stored properly. The sounds of a cigar being lit, the ice cubes rattling, it unleashes all your senses. The flavors change over time the Cigar becomes hotter and stronger, while the scotch becomes softer with the melting of the ice. This soothing hour or so, grants me a balance as I abandon the rigors of everyday life.
