Smedo's Gentlemans Club
“Smedo’s Gentlemen's Club” Watercolor 28x24 To many this is merely a stucco garage, but to my neighbor Mark Smed, it is a gentlemen's club. As you can see, the garage needed a paint job. Mark’s idea of painting was broken down into squares per week. Much time passed and not much progress was made. Corky, another friend of mine, and I decided we would paint Mark and Karen’s garage for them. The catch is we would paint the garage door while they were on vacation. We would scrape, prime and paint...fuchsia and lime green in a checker board pattern. We soon realized that Karen wouldn’t see the humor in this and Mark would leave it just to spite us. That is when I decided to make a neighborly wager. The bet was who would finish first, Mark and his garage door, versus my entire house that had to be prepped and painted. The odds obviously would be stacked in Mark’s favor, but this was Mark, and needless to say the steaks he had to purchase to settle this wager were delicious. After much harassment, Mark and Karen expressed interest in owning a piece of my art. That is when I decided to paint this picture of Mark’s garage. When I gave this to Mark and Karen I wrapped it in paper that simply stated, “I thought I would paint your garage since you couldn’t.” This painting is now proudly displayed in their entryway... not many people have pictures of their garages, let alone as one of the first things you see as you enter the front door of a home.
