Refection of Faith
“Reflection of Faith”
Acrylic 36x48
Jim and Saundra Finseth’s desire was a story that would reflect their connection to faith. At first one notices that Jim is a craftsman. He builds practically anything from wood, even a crate for one of my paintings, not many people have crates built out of solid cherry, but if Jim builds it you will. Saundra, more of the home decorator, now has her own store Spread Joy. If you know Saundra one realizes her spirit and joy is genuine and contagious. Their daughter Jayna, has left her impression on not only her parents but on this piece with chalk drawings in Jim’s shop and on the front door of Saundra’s store as well with her hand print and name streaking the glass. Once we go beyond the obvious, you can start to see their reflection of faith, from hidden symbols of Jesus (the stylized fish) as a door knocker, to embellishing the pottery throughout. Even the light fixtures themselves, have this symbol that can be searched out. Saudra’s logo Spread Joy first seems to appear as a queen’s crown but, if you look close, it is actually the symbol of Jesus spreading outward. A shepherds cane is mixed in with the umbrellas the window above the front door has a steeple of a church reflecting in the glass of the window. The shape of the front door mimics a cross with the light shinning through, and the frames of the windows behind also reinforce this feeling of faith. Yet the most dominant symbol is front and center on the building. A large cross. If you look closely you can see where Christ was nailed to the cross. There are two holes where his wrist would have been, a thorny grape vine relief where his head rested, and one spot below the light where his feet where nailed to the cross. It was my intention to show that the Finseth’s faith is reflected in everything they do. It is how they live their lives. And if you choose to see it, you too will always be able to find it.
