Trattoria Del Lago
“Trattoria Del Lago”
Acrylic 60x48
Trattoria Del Lago, In Italian it means a small rustic inn or country eating establishment on the lake. This rustic establishment is a personalized piece for Mike and Nicole Eckstrom. This building was originally City Hall near the lake in Albert Lea, Minnesota. I wanted to recreate this building with thought to it’s past with the door and windows that is more in keeping with the buildings past. The main theme of this piece is simply family. If you look closely, Alexandra enjoys dress up so she has a room for just that. Dominica loves books and Francesca is intrigued with reptiles. These elements are scattered all around the entire establishment. I scattered these books and dinosaurs around because our children don’t just have there own space they are completely interwoven in our lives. Ironically after creating this piece someone told us to never apologize for your children's things scattered around the house...that is the way it is supposed to be, it means they are with you. Upstairs you can see all of Mike's larger than life items, from a fish tank that one can actually get into to clean, to the huge movie screen hidden behind the cabinetry. I have kept up the theme of placing past and future paintings in the gallery next door and in Nicole's restaurant. Not only did I think it is fun, but it also gives the viewer a glimpse as to what lies ahead. The inspiration for this painting lies within Nicole's restaurant. Like most Italian dinning experiences, it is simply about family. This space allows for people to gather and linger in luxury for the entire evening. Instead of several tables we have one, where family, friends and visitors experience the pleasures of simple food, great wine and each others stories.
Through discussing what the restaurant should be called Nicoles brother gave us sheet of Italian phrases and names, and one phrase sums up this painting for me. “A tavola non s ’ invecchia mai” (One never grows old at the table). I believe this is so true. It has been these moments at the table that my wife and I have had our children's undivided attention. It is where we have spent many evenings learning from and enjoying in others. Cheers to the Eckstoms Trattoria Del Lago.
